By estimating the overall risk of health care expenses among a targeted group, an insurer can develop a routine finance structure, such as a monthly premium or payroll tax, to ensure that money is available to pay for the health care benefits specified in the insurance agreement.

Re: Make sure you know your options: Tales from the colonoscopy world

The maintenance and promotion of health is achieved through different combination of physical, mental, and social well-being, together sometimes referred to as the “health triangle”.

Re: Make sure you know your options: Tales from the colonoscopy world

Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living being. In humans, it is the general condition of a person's mind, body and spirit, usually meaning to be free from illness, injury or pain (as in “good health” or “healthy”).

Re: ROI for sick care system– its a tough case to make

I would like to thank you for the efforts you have made in writing this article. If its catastrophic only, it would be based on your individualized risk of having a catastrophic incidence and may not cover things like statins, migraines, etc.

If you look at Safeway's model, the approach provides discounts where established risks are being addressed and controlled.

Likely, catastrophic insurance would look similar to auto-- it would have a defined set of criteria that triggered it and everything outside of the insured criteria would be something that would be taken care of outside the insurance model... gas, paint, maintenance, minor dings, driver's education, etc,

This leads to a much more clearly defined insurance product and rate competition over a standard set of features for clear customer segments. On the customer end, this leads to more understandable products and clear/ transparent and narrow products that are much easier to compare.

Re: Health Reform: Top 5 criteria for a Sustainable Health System

Could you provide more detail about what you mean by "Auto insurance has a system where we each pay based on our actuarial risk."

Unlike auto insurance which reflects factors such as the car I drive, the amount I drive, how well or badly I drive, should my health insurance reflect my actuarial risk?

What if I am healthy and develop cancer despite not having any risk factors? Ironic.

Healthstreaming is about making things useful for me...where my weekly basketball game with friends pops onto my calendar with a reminder so I'm likely to go; where healthy items become my default choice when I look for takeout.

Making health easy is where the innovations are needed...behavior modification is much less practical than healthy defaults...and accomplishes the same thing.

Re: HealthStreaming: What data would you need in your stream to make your health decisions?

People already have enough "data" and information about their health. We don't need more tests to tell when someone is over weight our out of shape or should stop smoking.

The problem has nothing to do with date or information or even knowledge but with far more complex social and behavioral interventions. Kids in schools for example need healthier meals and sports programs to help stop increased rates of obesity.

Honestly do you think anyone who is fat isn't aware of it or the impact on their health? How many hours in the past week did you exercise?

Did you have the recommended fruits and vegs today? You know what to do and have the data but it is the support to change behavior that we need. We need less research into health IT and far more into how to motivate people to change. Only 20% of health care costs are directly related to life style choices so this is important but not sufficient.
